About the presenters

Etienne Wenger, USA
Social Learning Theory - Current Issues and Challenges

Since Etienne Wenger in 1991 together with Jean Lave published the book 'Situated Learning' he has been a central figure in international educational research. In 1998 he published the book 'Communities of Practice', where he develops his socially oriented theory of learning. He now works as an independent researcher, consultant and author in North San Juan i Californien and is a mostly coveted lecturer all over the world. Wenger is originally from Switzerland, but lives since 1982 in USA. At the conference he will provide his newest ideas on social learning.

Peter Jarvis, UK
Towards a Comprehensive Theory of Human Learning - an Existentialist Approach

Peter Jarvis is a Professor in Adult Education at the University of Surrey south of London and is a Professor of Honour at the University of Georgia, USA. He is educated as a theologian and and sociologist and has for more than 20 years been the leading scholar of educational research in UK and an important figure within the international movement on lifelong learning. He has published several books within his field and with the book 'Towards a Comprehensive Theory of Human Learning' from January 2006 he has condensed his comprehensive work in a coherent theory with an existentialist approach, which he will address at the conference.

Knud Illeris, DK
The Three Dimensions of Learning - Up-dated

After 33 years at Roskilde University Knud Illeris is now a Professor of lifelong learning at Learning Lab Denmark at the Danish University of Education. Having for a long time been well known within a Scandinavian context he received his international breakthrough with his book 'The Three Dimensions of Learning', which has now been published in six countries and forms the background for his appointment in 2004 as Professor of Honour at the Univertitety og Columbia, New York - at the Department, where John Dewey and Jack Mezirow did most of their work. Publishing Knud Illeris' new, strongly revised and extended book on Learning is the primary reason for conducting this conference.
