Lynne Chisholm University of Innsbruck, Institute of Educational Sciences, AT National Competence Centre at DPU Thursday 11 February 2010 at 15.00-17.00 Room D174 Open universities, open societies European university systems and universities as organisational and working cultures are responding in very different ways to lifelong learning as concept, policy and practice. Some have seen little need for structural and pedagogic change, on the grounds that lifelong learning is not very relevant for their role and purpose. Others recognise the scale of the challenges, but most universities have yet to address these decisively. This contribution explores the reasons for slow response and, in some cases, rejection of the relevance of lifelong learning for universities ? and goes on to argue that understanding the significance of lifelong learning for the university sector and in higher education content and process is crucial for meeting the challenge of shaping open universities in open societies.
