ANDALUCÍA ACOGE / ANDALUCIA WELCOMES

EDC practices
Education against racism, intercultural education and human rights education

DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITY
The federation Andalucía Acoge was established in 1991 by the founding members Sevilla Acoge, Almería Acoge, Granada Acoge, and Málaga Acoge. The aim was to join forces in order to give a more efficient and global answer to the recent immigration phenomenon. Andalucía Acoge adopted the status of a non-profit, a-political and non-confessional organisation working in the field of immigration.
Currently, Andalucía Acoge is composed of federated associations, which are distributed throughout the provinces of Andalucía, as well as in Melilla. Their territorial distribution is as follows: Algeciras, Almeria, Córdoba, Cádiz, Granada, Jaén, Huelva, Málaga and Melilla
Andalucía Acoge tries to put into practice, in an organised and conscious manner, the ideal of universal solidarity and justice. A concept of the individual and society that emphasises the dignity of the person supports this value of solidarity. That means that the human medium and culture, which has formed us, has to be taken into account, but without leaving behind the individuality and singularity of each person.
Our proposal is to analyse one of the projects on the Training area and Intercultural Coexistence. The aims of this area is to encourage a positive intercultural coexistence, i.e. by enabling the transformation of mutual differences into mutual enlargement in terms of human relations, which lead to a pluralistic society, respecting everyone's rights, and open for diverse cultural contributions and identities.  In order to get this aim, they are creating places and occasions, which favour mutual exchange and knowledge between different cultures.

Rationale
It is a civil society initiative in immigration, an increasing and relevant phenomenon. Moreover, Andalucia acoge develops a well-known amount of projects and they even go in front of public institutions.

It is a non-formal experience focus on the women empowerment. The aim is to empower women in order to take part in social and political life.

They are organized as a place where women from different context can share their interest, debate about them and reflect on. Through those courses, women not only find a social space but their capabilities are also developed. That?s the reason for the title: empowerment schools.

In Biscay, this IRI is developed in five councils by an association and the support of the different Town Halls (Getxo, Basauri, Ermua, Bilbao and Ondarroa).

They are organized in different courses (women literature, feminist theory, cinema, communication skills,). It started five years ago and the amount of women is increasing in all the towns.

Rationale
The initiative goes further on other traditional offers due to that empowerment school include the public dimension into their aims. Hence, it is an innovative initiative in our context. In this case, it is an offer from town halls to women population.
