INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROJECT

In the Communication on Adult learning: It is never too late to learn (2006), key message No. 2 considers the professional development of those working in the field of adult education of primary importance to improve the quality of adult learning.

The Action Plan on Adult Learning: It is always a good time to learn (2007) singles out the quality of staff as a crucial motivating factor for adult learning, and recognises that "little attention has been paid to the training (initial and continuing)" of adult learning staff (p. 8).

Although a number of European policies emphasize the quality of adult education and training, and the efforts of a number of researchers and practitioners have been directed towards the identification, description, comprehension, and understanding of new demands on adult educators in diverse socio-cultural contexts, limited attention has been paid to the initial education and pre-service training of prospective adult educators.

Becoming Adult Educators in the European Area (BAEA) came to life with the purpose of filling the knowledge gap on how prospective adult educators acquire pre-service professional qualifications ? a problem that is well-known to practitioners, researchers, and policy makers.

The project was granted financial support by the EU Lifelong learning program / Grundtvig sub-program. It last two years (October 2008 / September 2010) and mobilised resources from 4 European countries, 7 institutions, with a counter-balance between research- and practice-based organisations in the field of higher- and adult education.
