ASEM LLL Hub Chairmanship
ASEM LLL Hub welcomed its new chair, Mr. Claus Holm. He is the former Vice-dean for Communciations at The Danish School of Education, Aarhus University.
The ASEM LLL Hub's former Chair, Prof.(hon) Dr.h.c. Arne Carlsen, was appointed as the Director of UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning in Hamburg from 1st June 2011.
The new Chair of the ASEM LLL Hub's Advisory Board is Dr. Piniti Ratananukul, Higher Education Commission, Ministry of Education, Thailand.
The new Co-chair of the Advisory Board is Mr. Dmitrijs Kulss, Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia.
Medals awarded to the founding Chairs of ASEM LLL Hub
Mr. Arne Carlsen (second from the right), former Chair of ASEM LLL Hub and Mr. Joern Skovsgaard (second from the left), former Chair of the ASEM LLL Hub's Advisory Board were awarded medals by the Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training for their significant contribution to the development of education and training, particularly in lifelong learning, in Vietnam.
ASEM LLL Hub has assisted the government of Vietnam in drafting its national strategy for building a learning society by providing a situation analysis report and in establishing the SEAMEO Regional Centre for Lifelong Learning in the country.

ASEM LLL Research Network 2 (RN2) Workshop 'Organisational cultures – learning cultures', 11-13 July 2011, Innsbruck, Austria
18 researchers from 11 countries including Austria, Czech Republic, France, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Thailand, the UK particiapted in the 3-day workshop. The workshop focused on comparative analysis and interpretation of the RN2 Workplace Learning Survey across 10 ASEM countries in 2010. Network members also presented new research papers related to the overall theme of workplace learning and identified six possible aspects, which will be studied from a comparative perspective. ASEM LLL Research Network Meeting, 8-10 September 2011, Riga
ASEM LLL Research Network 5 (RN5) "Core Competences", which was established in 2008, gathers and consolidates theoretical positions which address various areas of human competence in order to contruct a new model of research on competence. The Network organised a seminar and internal meeting "Theorising and Praticing Core Competences" on 8-10 September 2011 at the University of Latvia.

ASEM Forum on Lifelong Learning “LEARNING UNLIMITED" during the Danish EU presidency, 29-31 May 2012, Copenhagen

In 2012 Denmark will hold the EU presidency, ASEM LLL Hub will, on this occassion, organise a Forum entitled "Learning Unlimited" to provide a platform for dialogue between researchers and policy makers, and highlight the Grundtvig tradition and Denmark’s contributions to the Asia-Europe cooperation in lifelong learning. The ASEM LLL Forum 2012 in Copenhagen will be a good opportunity to engage all EU 27 member states and the Asian ASEM countries in the effort to expand the partnership and promote lifelong learning in the two regions.

Globalisation, and the trans-nationalisation of education policy-making which accompanies it, have many implications for policy studies in adult and lifelong learning. As globalisation deepens, so does its impact on national policies and on how educational research is done.
The conference will explore how globalisation affects agency and policy processes and how it affects the conditions or structures under which policy processes occur.

160 senior ministerial officials from 40 ASEM member countries participated in the 3rd ASEM Ministers of Education Meeting. Two new books on workplace learning
Professor Karen Evans, member of ASEM LLL Hub Research Network 2, has jointly authored and edited two new books on workplace learning, offering contrasting insights into learning in, for and through the workplace.
The first book, The Sage Handbook of Workplace Learning, provides a state-of-the-art overview of the field of workplace learning. The authors are theoreticians, researchers, and practitioners in this burgeoning field, which connects higher education, vocational education and training, post-compulsory secondary schooling, and lifelong education. Karen Evans has worked with an international team of editors, Marg Malloch, Len Cairns and Bridget O’Connor, to bring together different views, theoretical dispositions, and incisive analyses. Contributors include Michael Eraut, Yrjo Engestrom, Lorna Unwin, Per-Erik Ellstrom, Tara Fenwick, Martin Mulder, Stephen Billett and many other leading names from the field of workplace learning.
The second book, Improving Literacy at Work, which Karen Evans has co-authored with Alison Wolf, moves from broad overview to a very specific focus. While Improving Literacy at Work builds on detailed research from the UK, the issue is a universal one. The book examines fundamental questions about adult literacy development at work: how do adults’ literacy skills impact on their working lives, and on the enterprises where they work?; how can we develop these essential skills in the workforce?; when and how can literacy support at work change individuals’ work practices and engagement with further learning?
Both The Sage Handbook and Improving Literacy at Work speak to managers and trainers in industry, trade unions and professional associations as well as researchers and lecturers in higher, adult and further education and all those interested in the fundamental changes that are taking place in workplace learning.
Forthcoming Book: Second International Handbook of Lifelong Learning
The second edition of the International Handbook of Lifelong Learning is extensive, innovative, and international in scope, remit and vision, inviting its readers to engage in a critical re-appraisal of the theme of “lifelong learning”.
Professor Karen Evans, member of ASEM LLL Hub Research Network 2, is the editor of Section II The Policy Challenge. Professor (Hon.) Arne Carlsen, the former Chair of ASEM LLL Hub, wrote the foreword.

Parental support initiatives improve literacy of children according to new study
A new study produced for the European Commission by independent experts concludes that involving families in literacy programmes is essential to increase the literacy levels of children and adults. The report provides an overview of research and evaluates strategies, policies and initiatives in the field of family literacy, in particular those targeting disadvantaged families. It highlights good practice through case studies of unique and successful initiatives throughout Europe.

Two new books on workplace learning
